The phone - dubbed The Storm - will be unveiled this autumn, and will have a 'clickable' touch-screen.
"This clickable interface is like an engineering marvel," said RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie. "It is revolutionary."
The launch comes as RIM ups its efforts to make a name for itself amongst consumers, and build on its solid foundations in the business user market.
The Storm comes preloaded with software for e-mail and managing documents, as well as a media player for music, movies and photos. It will also come equipped with a 3.2 megapixel camera.
The Storm will follow RIM's latest attempt to break into the market by launching a flip version of the BlackBerry.
RIM did not announce a specific release date for The Storm, nor did it offer details on pricing.
