Pure launches Contour D1 digital radio with 30 pin, lightning connector and Bluetooth

Pure's latest digital radio dock combines 30-pin and Lightning connectors for iOS devices and Bluetooth for Android streaming in a world's first

Pure has introduced a new digital radio into its line-up, but the Contour D1 is no ordinary radio; according to Pure it’s the first of its kind in the world, with 30 pin and lightning connectors for iOS devices and Bluetooth for wireless streaming from any smartphone or tablet.

The Apple-certified radio has a revolving dock for iPhone, iPad and iPod devices, which uses clip-in adaptors to swap between the old 30 pin connector and the new Lightning adaptor Apple has adopted for all its latest products. When you aren’t charging or playing from your smartphone or tablet, the dock revolves back inside the main unit.

Beyond DAB and FM radio, the Contour D1 also has Bluetooth support for wirelessly streaming from any device, letting anyone with an Android smartphone or tablet share their music as well as iOS owners. There’s also a 3.5mm input jack for wired playback from another source.

A slim remote control attaches magnetically to the back of the unit when not in use, letting you control volume, source selection and change tracks on supported devices. There’s also a button to favourite songs when using Pure’s own Connect streaming app on an iOS device.

According to Pure the Contour D1 produces “high-clarity, room-filling sound” with its 20W RMS speakers – we only heard it briefly during the announcement, and that was in a room full of journalists, so we’ll have to wait until we get one into the lab for a full test before passing a verdict.

“Despite the growing trend towards streaming music wirelessly, consumers still want and need to charge their Apple devices,” Nick Hucker, Pure’s director of marketing, said of the launch. “Contour D1 offers the best possible flexibility for all the family with the choice of docking old or new Apple models, listening to a wide variety of digital radio stations or playing music wirelessly from the comfort of the sofa regardless of Android or Apple ownership.”

The Contour D1 should be available to buy now here in the UK, with an estimated retail price of £149.99
