The options include creating image files such as TIFs or JPEGs that you can open and edit as usual, but you can also output files to PDF. Fujitsu bundles optical character-recognition (OCR) software which allows you to create searchable PDF files; a great way to capture and archive office documents. Unusually, you can also upload files directly to the cloud-based Google Docs or Evernote services, making it easy to share documents with colleagues or the family.

At the default quality, scans are sharp and colours faithful, but compression applied to reduce file sizes does leave some obvious artefacts. Where image quality is more important it’s easy to reduce or turn off the compression, resulting in images as good as those from any office-orientated scanner. The ScanSnap isn’t cheap, and we have some reservations about its sturdiness, but its ease of use gives it the edge over its competitors.
