Acer’s Predator Triton 900 laptop is a $4,000, 2-in-1 gaming beast

A weird mashup of productivity laptop and high-end gaming portable, the Acer Predator Triton 900 is a bizarre machine

If you’re looking for a beefy hinge, the Acer Predator Triton 900 won’t disappoint. It takes the power of Acer’s lineup of Predator gaming laptops, but adds in a convertible, flipping design that looks like it’s wandered off the set of an 80s sci-fi thriller. Oh, and it costs, $4,000 (£3,140).

The Triton 900 was first teased in IFA 2018, but Acer has now revealed all the details of its beastly 2-in-1 laptop, including release date, specs and an eye-watering price tag.

That hinge, which the company calls an “Ezel Aero Hinge”, means users can flip and extend the laptop’s 17-inch display, which doubles up as a touchscreen. This setup allows you to bring the screen closer to you (handy as this is one of those gaming machines without a wrist rest). Flip it the other way for watching Netflix or all the way around to use as some kind of overblown tablet.

The laptop’s 4K display has Nvidia G-Sync, so there won’t be much in the way of tearing as you game. Its internals can be configured with Nvidia’s new GeForce RTX 2080 GPU, as well as Intel’s hexacore 8th Gen Core i7 processors, NVMe PCIe RAID 0 SSDs and up to 32GB DDR4 memory. There’s also an Xbox wireless receiver for, you guessed it, connecting to an Xbox controller.

The Predator Triton 900 starts from $3,999, or €4,199. If that price makes your stomach drop, Acer also announced the Predator Triton 500; a thinner gaming laptop.

This machine has a 15.6-inch Full HD display, measures only 17.9mm thin and weighs 2.1kg. It’s specs aren’t as hard hitting at the Triton 900, but they’re still no slouch, with scope for Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 2080 GPUs, 8th Gen Intel Core i7 processors, NVMe PCIe RAID 0 SSDs, and up to 32GB DDR4 memory.

The Predator Triton 500 starts from $1,799, or €1,999. Both this laptop and the Triton 900 will be available from March this year.
