HTC teases GoPro rival for October 8th reveal

Smartphone manufacturer appears to be planning a move into action cameras with its latest reveal

HTC appears to be gearing up to announce a GoPro-rivalling action camera at its upcomingth event in New York, following the release of a teaser website showing slow motion, time-lapse and underwater video clips. It woud certainly be a departure from the norm for the smartphone manufacturer, having previously concentrated on high-end handsets like the One (m8), but it’s possible the company could be working on a new kind of phone rather than a dedicated camera.

A video posted to the official HTC YouTube page, titled “Something Remarkable is Coming”, points viewers towards the recamera.com website, which replays the same footage as a fullscreen embed. It shows people swimming, with the camera underwater, playing football in slow motion, close-ups of musicians, dancers and bike riders, and a time-lapse of New York – all presumably hinting at what to expect from the 8th of October announcement.

Although the video doesn’t actually show the device, enterprising Reddit user fodawim discovered teaser images hosted on the recamera website. The links have since been taken down, but were quickly rehosted and appear to show a wearable camera that looks a little like a small piece of PVC pipe.

The event, teased to journalists with an invite titled “double exposure”, was previously rumoured to be when HTC would reveal the Nexus 9 tablet. The company is believed to be manufacturing Google’s next Nexus device, but it would be unliklely that Google would let a third party take all the limelight for a brand new Nexus – particularly as the Nexus 9 is expected to be the first device powered by Android L, the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system.

Whatever HTC has planned for the event, we’ll be following it to bring you all the details as we get them – so be sure to check back on the 8th of October to see exactly what the company has been up to.
