Motorola Moto G 2 spotted in leaked images ahead of 4th September reveal

Motorola's Moto G sequel has been something of a mystery so far, but new leaked images seem to give the game away

Motorola is preparing to reveal a successor to the Moto G at a launch event next week, which will almost certainly coincide with the Moto 360 smartwatch finally going on sale, but so far the company has done a great job at keeping its next budget handset under wraps. That changed last night, when some images purportedly showing the phone appeared ahead of launch.

The images, posted to the Hellomotohk Facebook page, appear to show the unannounced handset from all angles, confirming that it will take design inspiration from the current Moto G as well as the cheaper, entry-level Moto E. As well as a larger, reportedly 5in display, up from 4.5 in the original Moto G, the new handset appears to have front-facing stereo speakers from the Moto E and a microSD card slot for adding extra storage capacity.

The images unfortunately didn’t arrive with any information on specifications, meaning it’s impossible to know if rumours about a faster Snapdragon S4 processor and an 8-megapixel rear camera are true. Swappable rear covers in a variety of colours and dual SIM card slots (likely limited by territory) were shown, however.

The biggest mystery is what the handset will be called. The Moto G2, G+1 and new Moto G have all been suggested by various leaks and rumours, but nothing has been confirmed to date. With Motorola’s cryptic event invite hinting at both a new Moto X and Moto G as well as the Moto 360, it’s possible the company has an entirely new naming convention ready to surprise the assembled press with, but for now we’re expecting things to stay simple.

At least we won’t have long to wait to find out if the leaks are accurate; Motorola’s launch event is scheduled for the 4th of September, meaning we’re just a week away from finding out what the company has in store for anyone after a new budget smartphone.
