Pst! Outlook exposes itself to all and sundry

Microsoft has announced plans to share information on the file format used by Outlook to store email, calendar and contact information. Third-parties will then be able to use this insight to write software capable of accessing data in Outlook's .Pst files, but without Outlook being installed. Previously it was necessary for the program to be installed on a PC before any data in the .Pst could be read.

Microsoft has already started using open formats in its Office software, making its software more compatible with alternative applications. Outlook is only available for Microsoft Windows so the company's latest move will create an opportunity for users of Linux and other non-Windows operating systems to write and use tools to access their previously-created data.
