Panasonic to launch consumer-ready 3D camcorder

Panasonic is set to announce a consumer-grade 3D video camera at a Tokyo press conference next week, according to reports.
PCWorld has revealed that Panasonic is to become the first major brand-name manufacturer to produce a 3D camcorder for the home user - while helping to drive demand for its range of 3D-capable HDTV sets.
While Panasonic already creates a range of 3D cameras - including the AG-3DA1, which is in the company's 'budget' professional line and custom-made to order at a mere $21,000 - the new camera, which has not yet been officially named, will be a lot friendlier to your average consumer's pocket than the company's existing line-up.
As well as a - significantly, hopefully - reduced cost, the mass-produced 3D cameras will be a lot more compact than Panasonic's current range. By sacrificing focal range and light-gathering capabilities the lens assembly will be shrunk considerably, while a reduction from the resolution on offer in the professional line - which records a pair of full-HD 1080p video streams - will simplify the electronics and reduce the size of the body.
While budget-friendly 3D camcorders are already available on the market - including one from DXG - Panasonic will bring brand recognition, as well as offering a complete branded package of camcorder and 3DTV to consumers.
Detailed specifications of the camera - including recording resolution, video formats supported, and most importantly price - won't be available until after the company's press conference in a few days.
