Sanyo launches new Xacti dual compact

Sanyo has announced the latest entry in its Xacti line of pocket-size dual cameras: the Xacti VPC-PD2BK.

Unlike previous models in the range which can be a little bulky, the new Xacti is designed to be incredibly compact without sacrificing features: Sanyo's idea is to create a single device that amateur photographers and videographers can carry and which is capable of performing well at both tasks.

With that in mind, the Xacti VPC-PD2BK includes the sort of features a photographer would expect from a compact camera: a 10 megapixel sensor sits behind a 3x optical zoom lens and an on-board flash, enabling users to capture high-resolution stills even in low-light conditions.

For the videographer, the Xacti VPC-PD2BK can be switched into film mode - at which point it transforms into a pocket camcorder capable of capturing full 1080p video at 30 frames per second, which a pair of microphones record high-fidelity stereo sound to match.

Both video and stills are captured on to a removable SD card, with support for SDXC high-capacity cards of up to 64GB included. USB connectivity allows content to be transferred to a computer - which charging the internal lithium-ion battery - and a mini-HDMI port means the gadget can be hooked directly to an HDTV or other display.

The VPC-PD2BK is due to launch in North America in September for $170 (around £110), although so far Sanyo hasn't confirmed UK availability or pricing.
