Alfa Romeo MiTo launches with TwinAir option

New engine boosts torque, drops emissions and fuel consumption

Alfa Romeo has officially added its award-winning 85hp TwinAir engine to the MiTo sporty supermini, dropping the carbon dioxide emissions and improving the vehicle's fuel economy.

According to Alfa Romeo's testing, the MiTo fitted with the 875cc twin-cylinder turbo powerplant with electro-hydraulic valve control technology - otherwise known as the TwinAir - manages to hit a fuel economy high of 67.3mpg while dropping carbon dioxide emissions to just 98g per kilometre driven for Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) exemption.

While the remainder of the vehicle's specifications and features remain the same despite the new engine option, those plumping for the TwinAir models will be given the option of a new body colour: Ametista Black, which features a subtle purple hue.

"The Alfa MiTo TwinAir is an intelligent response to modern driving requirements – premium styling, a sporty and engaging driving experience, combined with outstanding ecological and financial benefits", claimed Damien Dally, head of brand at Alfa Romeo UK, of the new model. "It's the last word in automotive engineering in terms of technology, performance and environmental consideration."

Mated with a close-ratio six-speed gearbox, the new TwinAir MiTo has 85hp at 5,500rpm and peak torque of 145Nm at 2,000rpm to 3,500rpm - a boost of between 10 and 25 per cent compared to the 105hp and 78hp petrol engines available in the current MiTo range.

The TwinAir is being made available in two trim levels - Sprint and Distinctive - with pricing set at £14,150 and £15,350 respectively. Those opting for the Spring will get 16in sports alloy wheels, cruise control, front fog lights, manual climate control, Alfa DNA driving mode selector, and the Blue&Me hands-free and USB connectivity system. The Distinctive upgrades the features to include 17in sports alloy wheels, red-painted Brembo brake calipers, rear parking sensors and chrome/aluminium detailing.
