Cylinder activation technology boosts efficiency

Volkswagen has officially opened the order books for its new Polog BlueGT, which features ACT cylinder deactivation technology to help boost fuel efficiency.

Available with a 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine, the vehicle boasts a power output of 140PS and 250Nm of peak torque despite an impressive fuel economy of 61.4mpg on on the combined cycle and carbon dioxide emissions of just 107g per kilometre driven. That efficiency hasn't affected performance, either, with Volkswagen claiming the Polo BlueGT can complete the 0-62mph sprint in just 7.9 seconds and hits a top speed of 130mph.

The secret to the efficiency gain is the vehicle's new EA211 engine which features ACT cylinder deactivation technology. Under light and medium loads, the second and third cylinders are automatically shut down to provide fuel savings dependent on speed. The deactivation takes place between 1,400 and 4,000rpm and at torque outputs of 24Nm to 100Nm. Should the driver press the accelerator pedal to stress the engine beyond either of these limits, the two cylinders are reactivated with a claimed delay of 13 to 36 milliseconds depending on engine speed - meaning the driver should never notice any lag.

Externally, the Polo BlueGT boasts multi-spoke 17in alloy wheels and GT badges front and rear, while the suspension is lowered by around 15mm for a sportier ride than its counterparts. Selected features are also brought across from the Polo GTI, including the rear spoiler, rear bumper with diffuser, front bumper and LED daytime running lights, and the Polo BlueMotion's side-sills and front windscreen rain channels. A black-painted front grille and black door mirror caps complete the look, while an exclusive Blue Silk paint finish is available as an option.

Internally, the roof lining is the same black as the Polo GTI, and the instrument panel is identical too. The front features bespoke BlueGT sports seats and a leather-trimmed steering wheel with BlueGT emblem, while standard specification includes DAB radio with iPod connectivity, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity and XDS electronic differential lock.

The Polo BlueGT starts at £17,400 on the road for the three-door six-speed manual model and rises to £19,365 for the five-door with seven-speed DSG transmission. All models are available to order now, with customer deliveries expected to begin in mid-December.
