Nikon compact camera carries pico-projector

Camera specialist Nikon has announced its latest point and shoot - and this one comes with an in-built pico-projector.
Designed, in the company's words, to offer "exciting ways to share photos, movies, and even presentations" the Coolpix S1100pj is an interesting amalgamation of two devices: a compact point-and-shoot camera and an independent pico-projector.
The camera itself features impressive specifications, including a 14.1 megapixel sensor, wide-angle lens with 5x optical zoom (28-140mm equivalent), and an image stabilisation system which allows low-light shooting at up to 6400 ISO.
All the expected features of a modern compact are also included: a 17-mode scene selection system, subject-tracking focus, a fully automatic mode, and the company's proprietary Smart Portrait System - controlled via the 3in touch-screen display on the rear.
Where the Coolpix S1100pj differentiates itself from the competition is in the in-built projector: designed to offer a 47in screen from a distance of seven feet, the 14-lumen pico-projector can either be used stand-alone to show images and videos stored on the camera itself or connected to a laptop or PC via USB to project whatever is on the screen - including, for the business user, PowerPoint presentations.
The combination of the two technologies gives Nikon a chance to target two separate markets: as well as the home user who just wants to be able to share holiday snaps, the Coolpix S1100pj could appeal to business users who don't want to have to carry two devices with them on long trips.
The S1100pj launches in the UK in September for around £350 - we'll bring you a review when it's available.
