Samsung launches new 12MP compact cameras

Samsung has beefed up its point-and-shoot camera portfolio with the launch of a pair of new pocket cameras - including one which can shoot underwater.

The first is the SL605, featuring a 12 megapixel sensor along with the company's anti-scratch coating and rubberised buttons to increase its robustness for outdoor use. Using a 27mm wide angle lens with up to 5x optical zoom capabilities, the SL605 is also capable of taking VGA (640x480) video.

Perhaps the SL605's most impressive feature is the new Smart Night Mode, which Samsung claims allows for far higher quality images to be taken in low light conditions by giving users control over the strength of the in-built flash.

The SL605 is joined by the AQ100, which at first glance appears to feature similar capabilities: a 12 megapixel sensor behind a 5x optical zoom lens makes it as capable a pocket camera as its brother. Where the AQ100 differs, however, is its ability to function in up to ten feet of water - including a special Aqua Mode designed to tweak the settings specifically for sub-aqua photography.

The AQ100 also boasts support for recording HD video either above or below the surface at 720p - although Samsung hasn't detailed what format the video is stored in.

Although both cameras were announced and previewed at the PMA convention back in February, Samsung has finally launched the two units at retail in the US for $129 (£85) and $199 (£132) respectively.
