Pentax announces Optio M90

  • Pentax Optio M90 front
  • Pentax Optio M90 rear

Pentax has taken the wraps off its latest compact digital camera, the Optio M90.

This latest compact camera - available in either burgundy red or black - features a selection of improvements over previous models in the Pentax Optio range, although nothing that will come as a surprise to anyone with an existing compact digital camera.

The Optio M90 features a 12.1 megapixel sensor behind a 5x optical zoom lens which promises the equivalent of 28mm to 140mm in traditional terms, with a 2.7in anti-reflective LCD on the rear of the non-slip rubber-coated aluminium-alloy body.

As well as better facial recognition, the Optio M90 makes life easier for the casual snapper with smile capture and blink detection modes and twenty different predefined settings for various scenes. Interestingly, the Optio M90 also includes an automatic panorama function capable of stitching a wide panoramic image from a series of individual shots.

Video recording functionality makes its traditional appearance, although sadly it's limited to 640x480 VGA-resolution at thirty frames per second - a disappointment from such a high resolution sensor. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides the power, although Pentax hasn't revealed how many shots a single charge will net you when you're out and about.

The camera comes bundled with Arcsoft MediaImpression 2.0 image editing software for Windows and Mac OS, allowing easy image transfer, editing, filing, and printing.

The Pentax Optio M90 is expected to launch in mid-June for an estimated £119.99, and will be exclusive to Europe.
