Asus unveils GTX 460M laptops

Not content to reveal just one new laptop containing Nvidia's GTX 460M graphics chip, Asus has announced two models in its Republic of Gamers range.
The 17in G73JW is a refreshed version of the G71Gx we reviewed last year, available with a choice of Core i3, i5 and i7 processors, up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, a range of mechanical or solid state hard disks and a Blu-ray reader or writer. The LED backlit screen is available with a resolution of up to 1,920x1,080 for true HD on the go. The 15in G53JW has the same configuration options in a smaller chassis.
With 1.5GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory and DirectX 11 support, the GTX 460M is the second most powerful mobile graphics chip in Nvidia's Fermi architecture range, so should be able to handle even the latest games. Support for Nvidia 3D Vision will also allow for watching 3D movies and playing games in 3D through a compatible external display.
All that performance normally comes at the cost of battery life, so Asus is equipping the G53 and G73 with 8-cell, 5,200mAh batteries. We don't expect either model to last very long away from the mains though, particularly when using the power-sapping graphics chip. At 3.6kg and 3.85kg for the G53JW and G73JW respectively, neither machine is particularly portable, but are perfectly suited for desktop replacement duties.
While no pricing or release date has been officially announced, both machines' high-end specifications mean that they're likely to be expensive. Check back for more details as soon as they become available.
