Our Rating
Panasonic's aging Lumix DMC-FZ50 is the only other camera that can compete with the S100FS's superb ergonomics and versatile lens, but its image quality isn't up to the same standard. In fact, the S100FS's images are closer to those of an entry-level digital SLR, which is something we've never been able to say about a fixed-lens camera before. However, at £385, the S100FS costs more than some digital SLRs.
You must weigh up whether you want the S100FS's huge zoom range and impressive macro mode or a digital SLR's optical viewfinder, faster continuous shooting and lower noise levels. It's also worth bearing in mind that an entry-level digital SLR with two lenses to cover a similar zoom range would give the best of both worlds and wouldn't cost much more. It's for this reason that the S100FS misses out on full marks, but the superb controls, class-leading image quality and highly effective dynamic-range processing make it a great choice if you don't want the hassle of carrrying two lenses.
