TransferJet promises wireless images
Posted on 14 Jan 2009 at 10:21
A number of digital camera makers are backing a technology developed by Sony for wirelessly transferring images between devices.
Olympus, Canon, Kodak and Nikon are among those looking to implement TransferJet, which boasts speeds up to 375Mb/sec— 100 times faster than Bluetooth. That is quick enough both for still images and for transferring video from a camcorder.
And unlike Bluetooth, devices do not have to be paired before data can be shared. Instead they simply have to be placed very close to one another, within 2mm, a proximity that the developers believe will prevent unauthorised access to a device.
To work, both the sending and receiving devices will require the necessary chip, as Bluetooth devices do today. Toshiba has demonstrated a laptop with the chop embedded under the palm rest—all the user needs to do place the camera on the right part of the palm rest so that it is close enough to the chip. Toshiba has also shown a USB dock with the embedded chip and plans to introduce both laptops and external devices with the technology in the fourth quarter of 2009.
By then a new version of Bluetooth should be available, with speeds up to 10Mb/sec, with a 300MB/sec version to follow, though its implementation will be restricted.
