Sony has officially announced a new selection of NEX and A-Mount lenses, due for release in the near future for its digital SLR and compact style cameras.

The first model, due to arrive in September, is the SAL55300 A-Mount telephoto. Based on a 55-300mm F4.5-5.6 telephoto system with Sony's Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) system for whisper-quiet operation, the use of Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements - normally found on high-end Sony G Lens models - should reduce colour aberrations and boost image quality compared to rival lenses.

For closer-range use, the SAL18135 A-Mount lens offers 18-135mm telephoto range at F3.5-5.6 - equivalent to an 8x optical zoom. Based on a compact design, the lens includes both the Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) of the SAL55300 and a Direct Manual Focus system for accurate fine-tuning. As well as being offered as a stand-alone lens at retail, the lens will become the standard kit entry for Sony's α37, α57, α65 and α77 cameras.

Finally, the SEL18200LE NEX-mount lens offers NEX users an 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 telephoto system - equivalent to an 11x zoom range. Featuring Sony's Optical SteadyShot (OSS) technology for improved low-light shooting and clearer images at the extreme end of the telephoto range, the SEL18200LE also includes Direct Manual Focus for rapid adjustments. Perhaps its biggest feature, considering the compact dimensions of Sony's NEX family, is its size: compared to the older SEL18200 lens which it replaces, the SEL18200LE is smaller and around 12 per cent lighter.

Full UK pricing on the three new lenses is expected to become available closer to their September launch.
