Fujifilm debuts pet-detecting camera

Face detection might be old hat in digital cameras these days, but FujiFilm reckons it has a neat twist on a technology staple: pet detection.

Using tweaked versions of its face matching algorithms - which detect people and ensure that the focus and exposure is set so the face will come out clearly - FujiFilm's latest Finepix camera is capable of detecting your pet cat or dog and making your snaps come out as perfect as possible.

The technology, which according to ARN is being previewed with quite some success by the company at Japan's Camera and Photo Imaging Show this week, will debut in the Finepix Z700 - expected to hit shelves at the end of this month.

The pet detection system is simple to use: point the camera at your pet and depress the shutter button; rather than taking the image immediately, the camera will track your pet's face and wait for it to turn to the camera before taking the shot. The result? Far easier pet snaps than has been previously possible.

The trick isn't magic, however, with FujiFilm admitting that the technology struggles if the animal is "constantly in motion" or has large patches or hair obscuring its eyes.

The remainder of the Z700's specs are impressive, if nothing new for a modern compact digital camera: a 3.5" LCD screen, 5x optical zoom, and a twelve megapixel sensor make it a capable pocket camera. The camera should be available shortly at around £200.
