LG readies 19in e-paper display

LG Display is looking to super-size the eReader, with the planned launch of a 19in flexible e-paper screen.
Mentioned in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission - spotted by TechEye - the display would build on the work the company has already done with the 9.7in e-paper display that is used by Amazon for the large-screen Kindle DX eReader.
The planned screen doesn't just innovate in its size, however: the company is looking to make the display flexible, meaning it could be folded or rolled up without damage. With such a large display area - usually the realm of traditional desktop monitors - such technology is a near-necessity, for the simple reason that nobody wants to carry a 19in device around with them on a regular basis.
If the company succeeds in its aims, its display could be at the heart of the largest eReader yet seen - one the size of a printed newspaper, and far more comfortable to read traditional column-based layouts on.
Sadly, the filing doesn't offer a suggestion of when such a device might come out - or even if that's LG Display's ultimate aim: such technology could also find a use in low-power advertising displays, or as warning signs in industrial areas - or even as interactive maps in shopping centres.
That said, the first company to produce a folding eReader with a large-format screen such as LG is planning would likely find it an easy sell to a rapidly growing market.
