Samsung demos ultra-slim LCD display

Samsung has unveiled its latest LCD panel, measuring a tiny 1.8mm at its thickest point and leading the way for thinner laptops, tablets, and even smartphones.
The ultra-thin display was demonstrated at the FPD International 2010 trade show in Japan's Chiba City, where Japanese technology site Tech-On was able to snap some photographs.
Designed for use in the rapidly growing tablet market as well as ultra-slim laptops, such as Apple's recently updated MacBook Air, the Samsung display measures just 0.44mm thick and weighs a mere 28g when the backlight is removed, a considerable saving on the company's existing 1.26mm and 130g displays.
The 10.1in prototype on display at the show had a 1,024x600 resolution, 1,000:1 contrast ratio, and a 250cd/m² brightness, along with the ability to display around 50 per cent of the NTSC colour gamut.
Although Samsung believes it will take around two to three years to commercialise the technology, it claims that production time and costs will be kept on a par with its existing, thicker displays. An engineer at the event explained that "except for the use of a resin substrate, we used the same manufacturing processes as those used for our existing LCD panels", meaning that current factories can product the ultra-slim panels without expensive re-tooling.
Samsung's work in this area demonstrates a growing trend towards ultra-slim, ultra-portable mobile devices, as embodied by the great success of Apple's iPad tablet - success that Samsung clearly wants to be a part of.
