Apple adopts new graphics interface

Apple has unveiled a new 24in Cinema Display that marks the switch to a new graphics interface for its portable Macs.
The LED-backlit, 24in, 1920x1200 widescreen display has a built-in iSight video camera, mic and speakers in thin aluminium and glass enclosure.
It sports three USB 2.0 ports so users can leave peripherals such as a printer, camera, iPhone or iPod dock connected when they take their MacBook away, and an integrated MagSafe charger so, as Apple puts it, users can leave the notebook’s power adapter in their travel bag.
All this interconnectivity is enabled by the new Mini DisplayPort, part of the next-generation DisplayPort industry standard. It delivers a pure digital signal that can drive up to a 30in widescreen display and comes as standard on the new MacBooks, 15in MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.
Adapters are available for using the Mini DisplayPort with older generation VGA, DVI/HDMI and Dual-Link DVI displays.
Apple says that the new display is the greenest that it has ever made, with mercury-free LED technology, arsenic-free glass and highly recyclable materials. It meets stringent Energy Star 4.0 requirements and achieves EPEAT Gold status. The new display contains no brominated flame retardants, all internal cables and components are PVC-free and its foam packaging has been reduced by 44%.
The new LED Cinema Display will be available in November for a suggested retail price of £649. For details see: apple.com/uk/displays.
