FIRST LOOK: Samsung photo frame and USB monitor combo
Posted on 14 May 2009 at 15:59
Most digital photo frames merely display your images or maybe play MP3s in the background but Samsung's forthcoming SPF-87H and SPF-107H frames become fully functional monitors when you connect them to your computer's USB port.
The SPF-87H is entirely bus-powered, so you won't even need to connect the mini-monitor to the mains - perfect for laptop use.
Measuring eight and ten inches respectively, the SPF-87H and SPF-107H are no substitute for a 22in screen but there are plenty of uses for an extra display, from instant messaging and video chatting to watching YouTube clips and viewing email.
Shopper saw a preview of the two frames at Samsung's Central London launch, and was impressed with their image quality - particularly the stunning colours. With an estimated street price of £80, the SPF-87H is competitively priced by digital photo frame standards. Samsung has released digital photo frame / monitor combos before (such as the UbiSync SPF-105P), but the SPF-87H is the first to be available in the UK.
Photo frames aren't the only new application of Samsung's USB monitor technology. Models specifically for laptops - the Lapfit range - start at £129 for a 19in USB screen. We'll bring you full reviews of both products shortly.
