NEC launches 23in premium LCD monitor

Hot on the heels of winning a Best Buy award for its EA241WM monitor in our Labs test this month, NEC has announced a 23in version.
To look at the EA231WMi and EA241WM side by side, you'd have trouble telling which is which. Only an inch separates the two, but the new 23in model adopts a 16:9 aspect ratio and loses some pixels compared to the 24in 16:10 display, as it has a 1,920x1,080 resolution rather than 1,920x1,200.
However, the advantage is a lower price - around £285 compared with £300 for the EA241WM. Both are much more expensive than most 23- and 24in displays but, as we saw when we compared 17 competitors side by side, the jump in image quality is noticeable. Exceptional brightness, colour accuracy and build quality saw the EA241WM walk off with our coveted Best Buy award, and we're sure the newcomer will be equally impressive.
This is mainly due to the fact that the newcomer uses an IPS LCD panel, which generally produces better quality than cheaper TN-based LCD screens. Since the EA241WM had a TN panel, we expect the EA231WMi to be even better quality.
Both models have a fully adjustable stand and a four-port USB hub. Oddly, though, NEC has chosen not to include an HDMI port on the EA231WMi, but the DVI-D port is HDCP compliant.
We'll bring you an in-depth review as soon as the new display arrives in our Labs.
