NEC launches green 23" monitor
Posted on 2 Apr 2010 at 14:59
NEC Display Solutions has announced its latest full-HD LCD monitor - and it brings some impressive power saving features to the table.
The company claims its new 23" AccuSync AS231WM display draws approximately 50 percent less power than competing displays of the same size - and, furthering its eco-credentials, contains 50 percent less mercury making it significantly cleaner to dispose of at the end of its life.
The low power draw - helped by the presence of an 'ECO Mode' toggle which allows the user to switch between energy profiles according to requirements - doesn't appear to have come at the cost of the monitor's specifications, with all the major boxes ticked: a full-HD 1080p resolution, 1,000:1 contrast ratio, and 250cd/m² brightness all hold up well when compared to competing displays - as does the 5ms response time.
The monitor features both VGA and DVI inputs, with the HDCP copy protection feature supported on the digital input - allowing HDMI devices to play protected content at full resolution once a suitable HDMI-to-DVI adapter is purchased.
Interestingly, the company has announced that each display will also come with a carbon footprint meter designed to allow users to track the carbon savings made by using the reduced-power modes on the device - something which is likely to have helped the AS231WM receive an EPEAT Silver rating and Energy Star 5.0 certification.
The AccuSync AS231WM is expected to hit US shores in May at an estimated $269 (around £176), although UK launch plans have yet to be announced.
