Sony to launch atracTable smart surface
Posted on 4 May 2010 at 11:39
Demonstrated over on Pocket-Lint, the atracTable is the work of Swiss company Atracsys who made a 60-inch multi-touch smart table back in 2008. Having purchased the rights to Atracsys' technology, Sony is looking to mass-produce a 35-inch version of the atracTable.
Due for launch in June this year, the 35-inch atracTable will feature a display that Atracsys claims boasts a full HD resolution ... and a high contrast ratio.
The basis of the atracTable is similar to that of Microsoft's Surface: a multi-touch enabled surface is capable of recognising devices placed upon it, so when an MP3 player or smartphone is placed upon the table various options will be made available - such as the option to transfer files to or from the device with a simple gesture.
The system also features the ability to track body movements without the need to be in contact with the multi-touch surface, using a pair of Sony ISS XCD-V60 cameras to build an image of its user and track it through three dimensions.
The initial version of the atracTable will be aimed at storefront displays and business use - but it won't be long until such devices become a feature of many living rooms.
So far neither Sony nor Atracsys have offered a clue as to expected pricing.
