CTX S791A review
Considering that CTX's S791A is the cheapest monitor on test, it looks really stylish.
Finished in glossy black, it won't look out of place in a swanky office. When you get to grips with it, however, the CTX is a little disappointing. Its black exterior felt more than a little plasticky. The stand in particular was insubstantial and flexed noticeably when we attempted to adjust its front to back tilt.
Hooking it up to your PC can only be done via an analogue D-Sub connection, but at this price, that's no great surprise. An auto-setup feature quickly centered the screen and got our Windows desktop looking nice and crisp.
We did, however, have some issues with its image quality. A reddish tinge was evident in all our tests and there was severe and noticeable banding in our greyscale tests. Skintones in our test photos were also unrealistically reproduced. Gaming fared a little better, with almost unnoticeable ghosting evident, but the wayward colour balance robbed games of detail.
The S791A may be cheap, but it's not as cheerful as its rivals.
