Pioneer DVR-116D review
Our Rating
Most new optical drives only have SATA interfaces, but many older PC motherboards have only IDE connectors. You needn't worry if you want a DVD writer for just such a PC, though, as new IDE models such as Pioneer's DVR-116D continue to be released.
The DVR-116 was fast at writing single-layer DVDs, managing to burn them at just over 11X overall. Although it wasn't the fastest DVD writer we've seen at burning DVD-R DL discs, it still managed to write to them at a respectable 6.6X. However, it wrote DVD+R DL discs at less than 5X, which is one of the slowest burn speeds we've seen for double-layer discs.
It can be noisy, especially at the beginning and the end of the burning process, and you'll also have to supply your own burning software, as none is included. The DVR-116 is inexpensive, but there's little reason to replace your current optical drive unless it's particularly slow, or broken.
