Our Rating
Sony's DRX-S70U-R is a portable USB DVD writer.
Its black, brushed-metal case looks sleek and feels sturdy. Sony states that it can't be powered from a USB port, and includes a mains power adaptor, which limits its usefulness as a laptop accessory. However, we found that it worked fine when powered using a 5V-to-USB adaptor cable from www.solentcables.co.uk for £2. It's puzzling why one wasn't included in the first place.
We were disappointed by its disc-burning speeds. It couldn't match its claimed speeds, and didn't keep up with LG's GSA-E50N when writing single-layer DVDs. It was particularly slow when writing DVD-R DL discs, at less than 3X.
Nero's Recode software is included, which can squeeze a two-layer DVD movie on to a single-layer disc. This isn't enough to recommend it over the GSA-E50N though, which is both faster and can be powered over USB straight from the box.
