Our Rating
Pioneer's latest internal Blu-ray writer is the first we've seen with a claimed 8X writing speed for write-once Blu-ray discs.
It wrote a 25GB BD-R disc in 16 minutes and 35 seconds and a 50GB BD-R disc in 33 minutes and 38 seconds, the fastest times we've seen. Unfortunately, its 2X write speed for rewritable Blu-ray discs meant it took a lengthy 47 minutes to burn a 25GB BD-RE disc.
As with other Blu-ray writers, burning single-layer DVDs is relatively slow. It's quicker than most such drives at writing two-layer DVDs, however, just exceeding 6X in our tests. If you burn a lot of DVDs, you may want to keep your dedicated DVD writer.
Pioneer's BDR-203BK isn't cheap, but CyberLink's Blu-ray playback and burning software is included. If writing speeds aren't critical, LG's slower GGW-H20L is better value since it costs £59 less and can play HD-DVD movies, too.
