Philips is one of the founding fathers of the DVD+R format.
The company has been saying for some time that DVD+R is all you need, and so confident are they that this is indeed the case, that the Philips DVDRW824 doesn't even bother offering support for DVD-R.
This drive isn't cheap - and with an average DVD+R writing speed of just 6x, it's also slow compared to the others on test. Fortunately, there is a reason for this. As the Philips writer writes, it regularly checks the temperature and accuracy of the disc. As a result, the discs are very resilient to errors.
The bundles Sonic software includes some decent DVD viewing software, some basic video editors and the excellent MyDVD. The latter lets you easily produce professional-looking DVDs complete with menu systems. There's also Nero 5 for disc burning.
However, unless you need the software, the inability to write to DVD-R, DVD-RAM and DVD+R9 means you should look elsewhere.
