Samsung's TS-E552U comes in a black box with a USB Hi-Speed connector and an external power supply. Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD 8 is bundled so you don't have to rely on the built-in Windows XP CD Writing wizard.

The USB2 interface runs at 480Mbit/s (approximately 60MB/s) so is more than adequate to support 16X write speeds. We covered three internal drives using ATA interfaces in What's New, Shopper April 2005. The USB2-connected TS-E552U is faster in all but the DVD+R test - including a fast 23 minute 51 seconds DL write time - and even then, at just under seven minutes, it was only about one minute behind the fastest.

It's only £20 more than LG's internal GSA 4163B DVD writer (see Hotlist, below left). Considering its speed and excellent value for money, this is the external drive to buy.
