Plextor's PX716-UF is the only external drive that can burn dual-layer discs at 6X speed.
It wrote a full 8.5GB in 18 minutes and 34 seconds, faster even than its internal counterpart. It flew through our CD ripping test in just over a minute. The plastic finish feels well made and the blue operation light looks classy. It can connect via USB or FireWire. Unusually, it has two FireWire sockets: one with six pins, one with four.
Despite its phenomenal cost, only basic versions of Ahead's Nero and Pinnacle's Instant CD/DVD 8.3 LE are included. Like Plextor's internal drive, it's fast but not great value.
