This internal DVD writer is an extremely impressive device, though you might not guess it just by looking at the bland front panel.

The Lite-On SOHW-1693 is the first drive we have reviewed that can create DVD-R DL discs. These have the same huge 8.5GB capacity as the well-established DVD+R DL format. Confusingly, the new standard is referred to as dual-layer, whereas DVD+R DL discs are double-layer. The SOHW-1693 performed well in our tests, taking just five minutes and 56 seconds to burn a full 4.5GB DVD+R disc. It took under 26 and a half minutes to complete an 8.5GB DVD+R DL disc, and a DVD-R DL took 27 minutes and 41 seconds.

Lite-On supplies a alternative black bezel and a decent software bundle that includes an OEM version of Ahead's Nero suite.

This is a fast, flexible DVD writer. At just £40, it's also excellent value.
