NEC's new DVD writer is its first drive to write to DVD-R dual-layer discs. These have the same 8.5GB capacity as DVD+R double-layer discs but, confusingly, use a different naming convention.
NEC has also increased the supported write speeds from those of its previous DVD writer. The 3540 can write double-layer DVDs at 8X, which means it takes only 19 minutes to write a full 8.5GB. Dual-layer writing is at 6X, so it takes about 20 minutes 35 seconds to fill a disc. It also takes just under six minutes to fill both types of single-layer DVD.
There are many drives available for around the same price as the ND-3540A, but few can lay claim to such impressive writing performance. If you want a fast, no-frills, high-compatibility drive, look no further.
