This 500GB external hard disk is the first we've seen from Verbatim, a company better known for its blank CDs and DVDs. Although the plain black case doesn't look ornate, it feels sturdy.
This isn't the fastest external hard disk we've seen, but it performed well in all our tests. It's fast enough for everyday use, but if you regularly transfer large quantities of data, such as RAW images or HD video, you'll benefit from a drive with FireWire or eSATA ports, such as Buffalo's DriveStation Combo4.
We were pleasantly surprised by the low price. It costs just £70, which equates to 15p per gigabyte - the cheapest price we've seen for a 500GB external hard disk. Despite the low price, Nero's BackItUp2 Essentials backup software is included, making the Verbatim External Hard Drive great value.
