The DriveStation's plain black case looks unassuming compared with some of the sleeker disks here.
Although it's designed to stand vertically on your desk, it can also be used horizontally so you can stack it with any other storage devices you may own. At just £50 it's the cheapest 500GB desktop disk in our round-up, with a cost per gigabyte of just 10p.
Despite this low price, the DriveStation comes with Memeo AutoBackup, a useful program that can automatically back up your files in the background as you work. The drive was also consistently fast at copying files, topping the charts in almost all our performance tests.
Buffalo's DriveStation is great value. It's very similar to Iomega's 500GB Prestige but has a slight edge because it's a little cheaper and its two-year warranty is a year longer than the Iomega's. If your budget can't stretch to Freecom's £95 Hard Drive 1TB, then the DriveStation is a great choice.
