Our Rating
Toshiba is a long-established manufacturer of internal laptop hard disks, so it's no surprise that it also makes a range of portable USB hard disks.
Apart from some rubber feet on the bottom that prevent the disk from sliding around on your desk, the drive's glossy black and white design is as unremarkable as its name.
Although it doesn't feel fragile, the black plastic case flexes under pressure. The rigid case of the Fujitsu HandyDrive 500GB feels significantly more robust. No backup software is included, which is disappointing if you don't already own some.
The disk sped through our file-transfer tests, copying large files at an overall speed of 28.5MB/s and small files at 25.5MB/s. This makes it one of the quickest portable USB disks we've seen.
Toshiba's 500GB drive is a good buy at 18p per gigabyte, but the 500GB HandyDrive is even better. Its bundled backup software isn't very sophisticated, but it's cheaper, feels more robust and is just as fast.
