Some portable USB hard disks can feel cheap and flimsy, but Iomega's eGo certainly doesn't.
Although we wouldn't want to drop any hard disk, the eGo's metallic shell feels as though it could handle a few knocks. It flexes under pressure a little and doesn't feel quite as rigid at Iomega's previous hip-flask shaped eGo, but it's still one of the sturdiest disks we've seen. Our test unit came in red, but it's available in several other colours, too.
It's also one of the fastest portable USB disks we've seen, whether it was copying large or small files. EMC's useful Retrospect Express HD backup software is included. Its wizard-style interface is a little cumbersome, but it can back up files according to a schedule, copy only files that have changed since the last backup and keep earlier versions of your files in case you need to restore them.
Best of all, the eGo costs just 15p per gigabyte. It's an excellent-value portable USB disk and deservedly wins our Best Buy award.
