LaCie announces USB3 RAID hard disk
Posted on 21 Dec 2009 at 12:15
External hard disk manufacturer LaCie has announced its first USB3-equipped hard disk, the 2Big USB 3.0 RAID.
This an updated version of its existing 2Big Quadra hard disk. It has two easily accessible hard disk bays and supports RAID 0 and 1. In RAID 0 mode the two disks are joined together providing the combined storage space of both disks, but if one disk should fail then you’ll lose all your data. In RAID 1 mode the contents of one disk are mirrored onto the other, so all your data will be safe if a disk fails but the available storage is halved.
The 2Big USB 3.0 RAID will be available in early 2010, so LaCie hasn't announced specific capacities and pricing, but there will at least be a 4TB model equipped with two 2TB disks. We have high hopes for its performance. USB3 hard disks can be just as fast or faster than internal SATA hard disks and the 2Big should be even faster, as RAID 0 arrays tend to be faster than single disks.
