Hi, about 10 months ago, I purchased this PC from Cyberpower, and after reading the latest issue of CPC, I was inspired to give overclocking a try, since the E8400 performed spectacularly. This is my first time, and I wanted something modest, so I went decided to try 3.6GHz, which I should be able to get easily. So, I went into the BIOS and set the FSB to 400MHz, leaving the multiplier at the default of 9, which should have given me a 3.6GHz overclock. I changed the voltage to 1.2v (could this be the problem?) as I thought I should, saved the settings and exited the BIOS. Then I nearly wet myself as the BIOS didn’t post, instead the motherboard just let out a long screeching beep. I frantically turned to the troubleshooting pages of my motherboards manual, but this kind of beep wasn’t even described. Worried that I might be sending one of my components to electronic heaven, I held down the power button and turned it off (it was on for around 30 seconds). I pressed the power button again, and the system fired into life for about a second, before turning off again. I pressed the power button again, and it finally POSTed successfully, before telling me “Overclock failed...” I was then asked to either load the default settings, or edit the BIOS. I loaded the default settings, and all my CPU settings were back to normal. Granted I haven’t checked the BIOS again yet, or POSTed again, but this happened before when my brother pressed the NOS button (could this mean it won’t OC at all?) and it has worked fine ever since on default settings. The CPU temp is normal as is every other temp. I will test the POST again soon on default settings, but first I want to know:

Why did the OC fail? Did I miss something or do something wrong?
What does the sustained beep from the motherboard mean? Is there a chance I could have damaged my CPU or anything else?

Have a look at these to give you some ideas

Whats your ram specs (current speed, rated speed and voltage)?
Try to give us as much info as you can.
I have an E8400 on a P35 mobo (DFI DK P35-T2RS) at 4ghz at 1.31v cpu voltage and at 3.6ghz its only 1.15v (mostly on auto voltages for 3.6Ghz) so 3.6ghz should be fairly easy to attain. My memory at 4ghz is 445mhz-ddr2 900- 2.1v and at 3.6ghz is 400mhz-ddr2 800 - 1.9v. Remember that different parts even if they are similar spec will vary so don't expect exactly similar results.

as with all overclocks its best to go slowly - increase the FSB in 5or 10 MHz intervals and stress test frequently

you may just need to change the mem dividers or increase the voltage to the CPU, RAM or Northbridge

it really is a case of learning your systme and while it is scary the first few tmes it refuses to post you cna always do a full reset by removing the battery from the motherboard

I'd recommend making a note of what you change each time - think laboratory workbook - it'll help you figure out what was getting you closer to that desired result

as above overclock in small steps testing between, and keep the ram speed down until final cpu clock.
