Nintendo 3DS to cost £200?

Our recent hands-on investigation into Nintendo's up-coming may have whetted your appetite for the device, but there was one piece of information Nintendo has been keeping quiet on: the price.

As the device represents an evolution of the DS handheld gaming system - featuring a faster processor along with the innovative parallax barrier LCD screen which offers glasses-free 3D gaming - it's clear that buyers will be expected to pay a premium - but now there are hints as to precisely how much that might be.

According to the ElectricPig, the company will be looking to keep the price as low as possible - possibly setting the UK RRP below £200.

Although far from a firm commitment, Nintendo's head of UK marketing James Honeywell told the site that "we haven't made any kind of announcement [regarding 3DS pricing] at the moment, but the Nintendo DSi is available for around £129.99, the Nintendo DSi XL, with the larger screens, is around £159.99, so obviously it's going to fit, kind of, somewhere within that kind of architecture."

With its novel 3D gaming feature and increased specifications, it's clear that Nintendo will be making the 3DS its premier handheld gaming product - which is likely to keep pricing high, but not so high that it becomes a completely different class of product in the eyes of potential buyers.

3d for all?

Given that you state the method of 3d is 'parallax barrier lcd screen' and that you are experts do you reckon that myself (and upto an estimated 13% of UK population who can't see 3d (for myself owing to hypertropia)) will be able to benefit from the 3d effect?

Re: 3d for all?

It's hard to say - while it's unlikely that Nintendo's glasses-free approach to 3D will offer any improvement for those unable to discern 3D, it's possible that it has a better chance than most implementations owing to the adjustable nature of the display.

However, for the majority of people afflicted by conditions such as hypertropia, 3D will always be a damp squib at best and, at worst, completely useless.
