Sony PSP games head to PS3 as 'remastered' editions
Posted on 23 May 2011 at 11:41
Sony has announced plans to produce 'remastered' versions of PlayStation Portable games for use on its PlayStation 3 console, featuring improved graphics and an innovative cloud-saving feature.
According to the company, the games will include remastered graphics more suited to use on a large, high-definition display and full support for the PS3's DualShock or Sixaxis controllers. Some titles, Sony has hinted, may even get upgraded to stereoscopic 3D for those with 3DTVs.
More impressive than the news of upgraded graphics, however, is that certain titles will feature 'seamless' play between the PS3 and the PSP. Although only likely to be an option for certain titles, the idea is that both the PSP and the PS3 will update a save game stored on Sony's servers - meaning a user can play a game on the PSP while out of the house, and then switch to the same game on the PS3 at home without losing any progress.
Multiplayer gaming between PSP and PS3 users is also included, thanks to Sony's Ad-Hoc multiplayer mode, while games will also get additional content available only on the PS3 version.
Sadly, there are drawbacks to Sony's plan: those wanting to take advantage of the seamless PSP-to-PS3 save-game transfer mode will be expected to shell out twice for what is, substantially, the same game on two different consoles.
Sony has yet to offer a firm launch date, although more information is expected at next month's E3 event.
