Swiss Army knife company Victorinox launches secure flash storage device
Posted on 10 Mar 2010 at 11:05
Victorinox, the company that makes the familiar red Swiss Army penknife, is to launch a new secure memory stick device at an event in London on the 25th March.
The device, which will come in four models, will incorporate a USB memory stick with a built-in biometric fingerprint reader. The company is betting a six-figure sum that security experts won't be able to break the security on the device.
The device comes with Windows software to help you organise and manage your files, including synchronisation software for Outlook and internet favourites, a password manager and a secure login client for Windows. This means you can use the device to login to Windows by scanning your finger, rather than be entering a password. The device can synchronise favourites from both Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers.
There will be four secure models: two main models, the Presentation Master and the Victorinox Secure, each have an alternate Flight model that doesn't have blades, ideal for travellers who don't want to be stopped by security at airports. As well the secure flash drive, the Presentation Master comes with a laser pointer and a Bluetooth remote control, while the Victorinox Secure is fitted with a "high-performance" LED and a ballpoint pen.
The company claims that the device "can only be authenticated by a registered, uninjured finger". We're pretty sure you don't have to injure someone's finger when you cut off their hand.
The Victorinox Secure and Presentation Master will be available in models with 8GB, 16GB and 32GB of storage space, but pricing hasn't yet been announced.
