Sony PSP 2 hints emerge

Sony's expected follow-up to the PlayStation Portable console is being kept under close wraps, but some details regarding a development unit have leaked out.

Speaking to trade blog

Industry

Gamers, Netherrealm Studios' Shaun Himmerick - executive producer on the up-coming Mortal Kombat game - made the claim that his company has a PlayStation Portable 2 and is developing for the platform.

During the interview, Himmerick stated that "we [Netherrealm Studios] have a PSP2 in the house", and made some impressive claims about the power of Sony's next-generation hand-held console.

Talking about the work of porting the Mortal Kombat engine to the new console, Himmerick stated that the team had the game running at 60 frames per second - a speed which many games struggle to achieve on full-scale consoles, and one which offers amazing fluidity of motion to in-game graphics.

It's not yet known how far along in the development cycle Sony's PlayStation Portable 2 actually is: although originally rumoured to be launching in 2011, the lack of demo units at recent trade events have split opinion: some industry watchers believe that Sony is heading for a pre-Christmas surprise launch, and others that the project is subject to delays.

Sony have a lot to prove with the PlayStation Portable 2, following poor sales of its download-only pocket-sized PSP Go hand-held console. If Himmerick's comments about its power prove true, it could be third time lucky for the company.
