Nintendo announces new, larger DS console

Nintendo's handheld DS console has proved popular well beyond the usual gaming demographic, thanks largely to titles like Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training. The company has released three different versions of the hardware since 2004, and have just announced the launch of a fourth iteration, the DSi LL, which will have a 4.2in display.
The new display is considerably bigger than the 3in or 3.25in ones on current models, the DS Lite and DSi. The increased screen size has meant an overall increase in size, but it's only slightly larger than the DSi, measuring 91x161x21mm, but its considerably heavier, around 1/3rd more at 314g. Battery life is claimed to be similar.
The larger display will almost certainly have the same resolution as the smaller ones on other DS consoles. This will make games bigger and easier to see, but won't increase detail onscreen, and could result in a more pixellated appearance. It will be launched in Japan on Novmeber the 21st, and we hope to see it on sale in the UK early next year.
The larger display and new, more pen-like, stylus should suit those who struggled with the very compact previous models. The Japanese version also comes with built-in software, including a new Brain Training title, something we'd expect to be replicated here.
