Opinion: The Future Sound of Gaming

  • Sacred 2 features music by Blind Guardian
  • Opeth and Dream Theatre have contributed exclusive tracks to Sony's God of War III
  • Brutal Legend's soundtrack features 100 songs by well known artists

Soundtracks are an important and often underrated part of creating an immersive mood and setting, particularly in plot-oriented games. In general, we hope that we'll continue to see music of the quality that drew us in to games from Silent Hill to The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.

As with good films, the musical score exists as an important part of the work, rather than an easily exploitable way of shifting soundtrack CDs or persuading music fans to buy the game – we have Guitar Hero/DJ Hero/Rock Band/Singstar for that.

There's some room for tracks from popular bands and artists, but with a few notable exceptions (like Brutal Legend), these are perhaps at their best when the tracks are specially commissioned and written to fit the game.
