Dark Souls 2 Shield Design Contest winners revealed

Shields designed by members of the community have been picked to appear in Dark Souls 2

Dark Souls 2 developer FromSoftware has selected six winning designs from its Shield Design Contest. The six designs, which were submitted by series fans to the official Dark Souls Facebook page, will now be turned into in-game items for players to acquire and use.

Sequel to the brutally difficult Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2 looks set to drive players mad with tough boss fights and invasion-based gameplay, where gamers are able to jump into other players’ games uninvited and cause havok. The game launches on the 14th of March for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with a PC version set to follow later in the year.

The winning designs have been adapted to blend in with the grimy Dark Souls world. Designers Denis “DasHurz” Bachmaier, Charles Collier, Illim, Gabriel Verdon and Alexandre Etiennes Jonathan Du Cassé will all be credited in the game and recieve copies of the Dark Souls II Collector’s Edition, along with an actual frickin’ shield based on their design created by a blacksmith.

Only four of the six shields have been revealed so far; the final two will be unveiled on the 31st of January. It’s not clear whether they will imbue players with special abilities, or will merely provide a little extra protection against the game’s many, many enemies.

Sony’s Official PlayStation Access YouTube channel posted a short gameplay video earlier this week, and based on the footage we’ve seen we can’t wait to get stuck in when the game arrives on the 14th of March.
