Playing games on a Pocket PC is getting more rewarding. Increased processor power, battery life and memory mean you can place more demand on hardware. Age of Empires, a PC classic, has now come to the Pocket PC.
The scenario is unchanged: you start off in the Stone Age and slowly move forwards in time, progressing through various civilisations with your focus primarily on survival but also on domination.
Gameplay is pretty good given the small screen, though you will need to put some effort into learning the game's aims and objectives in the early stages. Be prepared to squint at the screen, as icons are small. You'll also need a good headset if you don't want the music to annoy those around you.
Machines with less memory may not accommodate large game files. Even if you've got lots of RAM you might not want it clogged up with a game. As well as offering the software as a download, MDM has made Age of Empires - and other applications including reference works such as the Concise Encyclopaedia Britannica - available on SD cards. If you use the SD card-based version, just pop it in the slot and it runs automatically.
