If your idea of fun is battering fantastical creatures silly with a barrage of battle axes and magic spells, this is the game for you.
Inspired by the classic hack-and-slash series Diablo, Sacred retreads its devilish predecessor's footsteps, adding little in the way of innovation.
The storyline of Sacred is nothing to write home about. It's the usual fantasy fare: have-a-go heroes taking on an evil adversary, hell-bent on havoc. You can play as one of six character types: Seraphim, Dark Elf, Battle Mage, Wood Elf, Barbarian and Vampiress. Each is different, with its own starting story, unique powers, weaponry and armour. A trusty steed lets you cover ground quickly and can be upgraded with saddles and bridles.
As you progress, the game involves you in various sub-quests, rather than relying on simple monster-bashing. These are set against a realistic backdrop of bustling towns and hazard-ridden countryside, creating an atmosphere akin to classic role-playing games such as Baldur's Gate.
Sacred has its fair share of bugs, though most of them create minor niggles rather than hampering play. Some have been fixed by a recent patch, which can be downloaded from www.ascaron.com. More problematic is the fact that, even with its sub-quests, the game is still not as taxing or immersive as the very best role-playing titles. For fans of more adrenaline-fuelled titles such as Diablo, though, it's an upbeat and addictive buy.
